Sarah Klang’s album, Beautiful Woman, is an expansive exploration of womanhood – from childhood to motherhood via teenage years, relationships and beyond. Klang digs deep into her own life on this album to unpack the very essence of what it means to be a woman today. One of her favourite tracks on the album is “Other Girls”, a song that explores the effects of women being constantly compared to one another through the male gaze. Klang says the song, which has a bitter-sweet tone, “is about growing up in the early noughties.” She recalls: “I was watching Crossroads by Britney Spears a lot. I think that film was meant to scare young girls into not doing things, but it actually had the opposite effect and we all wanted to go out and have adventures after watching that,” she laughs. The song’s darker side explores the late nineties and early noughties obsession with women’s bodies in pop culture. “Nothing tastes as good as feeling skinny, I was told when I was young,” Klang sings at the song’s opening, referencing Kate Moss’ controversial quote from the nineties. “And nothing makes you happier than being pretty on MTV and VH1,” Klang follows, yearning that she “just wants to be like the other girls are.”
