“Conscious Friendship” gradually stirs into motion as hypnotic rhythms, brooding bass, and dancing saxophone converge to create a sense of perpetual motion, of slow but steady flux. The latest single off Khalab’s new album Layers (out on August 25th) seamlessly combines the different musical worlds of each artist, building on the synergy between them to craft a layered and softly expansive piece. Jazz-influenced rhythms are supplied by Emanative, the cosmic, multi-cultural jazz project of forward-thinking producer and percussionist Nick Woodmansey, while multiwind player Tamar Osborn adds to the musical conversation with her thrumming baritone sax that sometimes unfurls into a gentle, searching melody. The track ends on a contemplative note, with the words and vocals of producer, DJ, and vocalist Grove, one of the most exciting and radical artists to emerge from Bristol’s eclectic music scene in recent years.
