Rule #46 - Poet

Rule #46 - Poet

Dustan Townsend, better known as Fish in a Birdcage, has written his own rules since 2014. Rooted in his upbringing, Dusty's mother imparted the fundamental rule #1, "Be Safe," and more rules followed with time. Reflecting this ethos, each of Dusty’s compositions is similarly titled a "rule." We’ve now reached “Rule #46 - Poet,” which heeds the warning to use your voice to amplify and stand up for those who might not be able to do so themselves. Expanding on this, Dusty relays “Rule #46 is the final track on my fifth album "Mentors". This is the call to action where preparation meets opportunity. You have words that you want to say. Your audience is waiting for you to say those things so they can feel like they aren't the only ones in the world who feel like they do. Say the things that have been left unspoken and use your voice. Poet was inspired by watching a brilliant Poet in my life practice his words in secret but never actually taking the time to share them. When I heard a private viewing of his work I was struck with awe at the depth of his words. I wanted him to share them with people. And I believe he will when he is ready.” The song, which was produced by Howard Redekopp (Mother Mother, Tegan and Sara), features a melodic piano line that is reminiscent of the best of the best musical theater stanzas, giving it an anthemic urgency. For fans of Mother Mother, Rio Romeo, & Will Wood.
