He has studied composition at the New School University in New York City and graduated with honors from the Helsinki University. He has done field-work among Khanty people in Siberia and is an expert on Karelian laments. As a composer, Rounakari has worked for film, TV, and theatres; his classical compositions have earned several international prizes including the Pro Musica Award 2003.
