Late Troubles is the solo project of Chen Xi, best known as vocalist of Beijing post-
punk band Snapline. Late Troubles — the name of an unreleased Snapline song — first took
shape in 2014 as a collection of loose ideas, spare synthesizers, and a trusted ukelele. Since
then it has become the main receptacle for Chen’s special songwriting charisma, a blank screen
for updates on his singular worldview. Chen has spent the last few years in the United States,
maintaining his day job at Microsoft HQ and feeding his nuanced takes on life, technology,
society and art through the eyes of his two young daughters and the filters of his growing
arsenal of synthesizers, samplers, and software chains. Late Troubles is the unvarnished, solo
voice of one of the Chinese underground music scene’s most interesting and engaging lyricists
and songwriters.
