Avernus

Country of origin: United States Location: Chicago, Illinois Status: Active Formed in: 1992 Genre: Doom/Death/Gothic Metal Themes: Despair, Suicide, Loss, Mourning, Death Current label: M-Theory Audio Years active: 1992-2009, 2012-present Avernus, in Roman mythology, was the name for the underworld. Influenced by artists in the vein of Paradise Lost, Dead Can Dance, and Cranes, Avernus' early efforts were a mix of death, doom, and cinematic atmosphere. The band's sound quickly evolved into something closer to Goth rock and they managed to record semi-consistently despite an ever-fluctuating roster of musicians, with guitarist/vocalist/founder Rick McCoy being the sole constant member throughout the band's existence. Alas, McCoy quit the band for roughly a year, between 2007-2008. Just prior to his exit, the band had welcomed back original drummer Rick Yifrach. They, along with new guitarists Bjorn Anderson and Doug Smith, recorded the song "Void Martyr". Shortly afterward is when McCoy would leave to pursue other interests. For the majority of his absence, the band lingered in limbo until both Anderson and Smith departed, leaving the band bereft of guitarists. Upon returning, the Ricks (Yifrach and McCoy), with the aid the bass and guitar-juggling Brian Whited, continued onward to record at least one additional album. Shortly after, Yifrach quit the music scene for good, leaving the two remaining members to carry on and eventually recruit another bassist and drummer. It wouldn't be long, however, that McCoy, as the last of the band's original membership, would end Avernus' activities, which he did in November 2009 after drummer Bill Hamning and guitarist Erik Kikke bailed on the project. It's said three other demos have been recorded, but have yet to see official release. The song "Void Martyr" was originally supposed to be placed on the band's upcoming endeavor, but due to personnel changes it was relegated to being a Myspace-only track. It's since been removed and is no longer available there for download
