Weiss & J.S. Bach: Suite SW47 for Guitar and Violin
This bundle presents the Lute Suite by Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750), upon which his friend Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) has later written an independent violin part. Bach's Suite BWV 1025 for violin and harpsichord, long thought to be of dubious attribution, has the harpsichord part perfectly coinciding with Weiss's Suite, as was recently discovered by a comparison of sources. The violin part, on the other hand, composed entirely by Bach, is a melodic addition independent of the Weissian musical material. It seems almost a 'free improvisation' over the Suite. Since the piece thus presents a twofold possibility of performance (Weiss's Suite alone, or the Suite itself with the addition of the violin) the artists present both versions on one CD, in the transcription for solo guitar and in that for violin and guitar. Played by Alberto La Rocca (guitar) and Carlo Lazari (violin).
