Utopia (Deluxe)

Led by husband-and-wife duo South Africa-born Jean-Philip Grobler and Germany-born Patti Beranek, the group retreat from a fractured world on fire and into the glow of a rapturous synth-spiked electro-pop catharsis—akin to a dance party at the edge of existence. St. Lucia beams out a light of their own and shines brighter than ever on the Utopia Deluxe album, featuring a new track "Two Moons" and Utopia tracks played live to a sold out crowd at Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, New York in November 2022. "Utopia is the first St. Lucia album we, as a band, can play live pretty much in its’ entirety since our first album When The Night," Jean says. "In many ways the songs were constructed to be good live. I suppose we’ve become somewhat known for our live show, and often people tell us that our songs truly come to life when they see them live, and here you can decide for yourself." Continuing to share context around the new track, Jean says, "Two Moons is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, it just took me 16 years to get it right. I wrote it in 2007 when I had a musical project called Kites and I’d just moved to New York City from Liverpool in the UK (I'm originally from South Africa). I was obsessed with bands like Mew, The Arcade Fire and Interpol, and the original version of the song sounds a lot more like those artists, heavy guitars and icy synths. The musical landscape changed and I took on new influences, St. Lucia was born, and the original vibe of the track didn’t fit with my new project, but I still got chills any time it came on rotation in my ‘unfinished demos’ playlist. I tried a few different approaches over the years, and I finally hit on this one which, while still having a bit of a noir-ish feel, fits a lot better into the overall St. Lucia aesthetic. Our album Utopia starts with a vocoded version of the first verse of Two Moons, and it seemed like it would be only appropriate to end the Utopia era by bookending the album with the fully fledged version of the track."
