Tremulant

Tremulant

Ghostwriter’s third album, Tremulant, was created over several years by Mark Brend, Suzy Mangion, Andrew Rumsey and Michael Weston King – borne out of a shared love of antique evangelical hymns and spiritual songs. Using English, Welsh, Scottish and American source material from the 19th and early 20th centuries, the quartet pieced together their reconstructed hymnal through remote collaboration – creating an album that somehow sounds both ancient and modern. Suzy, Andrew and Michael did the singing. Mark played the instruments. At no point during the recording were the contributors in the same room together. Indeed, most combinations of the four have never met in person. Mark started Ghostwriter in 2009, working with a revolving cast of contributors that’s included cult author Colin Wilson, Darren Hayman (Hefner and the French) and Jim Jupp (Ghostbox). Over two previous albums, an EP and multiple one-off tracks, Ghostwriter has combined electric and acoustic instruments, harmony and unison singing, found sounds and archive voice recordings to create music that Stewart Lee, writing in the Sunday Times, said “…evokes an afternoon spent poking around a bookshop in Hay-on-Wye that somehow proved impossible to find the next time you visited.”
