Birmingham (UK) based independent artist Rebecca Downes announces the third single from her highly acclaimed fifth studio album The Space Between Us. To be released on 10th February 2023 through her own label Mad Hat Records, the single will be available on Digital Download and all streaming platforms. Like much of the album, this guitar-based rock track was inspired by the experience of the last three years and is about separation, the desire to be back together and the excitement at the prospect of that happening. The album was released on 11 November and has been received enthusiastically by fans and reviewers alike. Described as “standing head and shoulders above the rest of the new releases” by Planet Rock Radio’s Bernard Doherty when he played the title track on his show, the release was No 3 in the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association chart of most played albums in November and No 6 in the same chart for December. As with the rest of the album, the track was programmed, recorded, produced and engineered by Steve Birkett with assistance from Steve Birkett Jnr. Mixing and mastering was by Gavin Monaghan of Magic Garden Studio in Wolverhampton, whose extensive track record includes working with Editors, Scott Matthews, Robert Plant and Paolo Nutini. On this track and throughout the album, Rebecca’s signature vocal style is to the fore and Steve’s multi-instrumental talents are on display, along with important contributions from the recording band – Neil Ablard (drums), Nigel Darvill (Keys) and Vince Yarrington (Bass). This is the third single from the album – Hold On was released in April 2022 and Rebecca’s cover of the Free song A Little Bit Of Love was released in September 2022. Talking about the song Rebecca says: “When I’ve spoken about the album, I have said a lot about it being inspired by events the last 2-3 years. But it’s certainly not all doom and gloom, and this track is intended to be an uplifting song about wanting to be with someone you love, and bridging the gap between you and that person. It’s about closing the physical and emotional space between us all that was a feature of the time during which this song and the rest of the album was written.” Steve Birkett continues: “The title of the song encapsulates something that was suddenly and dramatically a feature of our lives, but the lyric is about returning from that state and the feeling of the excitement that brought. Like all the album, it’s a tune that should sound just the same when played live as it does on the recording.
