Solitary Mountains

Solitary Mountains

SOLITARY MOUNTAINS is the new single from UK solo artist HUNTERESS, it follows her debut album release 'The Unshackling’ which came out in 2020 on Boomkat Editions (Documenting Sound Series). Hunteress is the parallel world of musician Laura Cannell and under this alias she digs deep into ideas of folklore, plantlore, ancient greek poetry and her own freeform songwriting to create Synthpop Moonlit Torch-songs. Imagine if everyone had a night alone on a mountain to find their most untamed and feral selves. With arms wide open, Hunteress spins in circles like a dervish on the dusty broken rocks beneath her feet, unrestricted and free from social and societal expectations and taking up the space she needs. Solitary Mountains explores who we really are when we strip away the assumptions and tedious life rules and let out another voice. Hunteress is all of the real warriors, shield maidens and witches you’ve never heard of, and she’s just starting to find her place in the world. Experimenting with synths, vocal layering and organically moving textures, Hunteress takes observations from our real and imagined histories and current society and discards the fluff. The name is from the now obsolete spelling of female hunter. BIOGRAPHY - Hunteress aka Laura Cannell. In 2020, Boomkat invited composer/performer Laura Cannell to be part of their Documenting Sound Series. They asked for music that she was currently working on during the first UK lockdown. At that moment Cannell was approaching ideas away from her acoustic instruments and her experimental early music and gave them an honest musical answer. She was working on music in a way she never had before, solely computer and vocal based. A completely new emotional and musical space was forming and here is where she made her debut appearance as Hunteress with a suite of synth-pop, moonlit torchsongs recorded at home in Suffolk, England. where she swapped her typical instrumental compositions for double recorder and overbowed violin in favour of synths and vocals making “a stunning, properly surprising entry to our Documenting Sound series”. Best known as a composer, performer and improviser, Laura Cannell has performed extensively throughout the UK and Europe, appearing on national and international radio, releasing 7 solo albums, multiple collaborative albums and EPs. She has worked with performers such as Lori Goldston (cellist for Nirvana & Earth), the writer/comedian Stewart Lee, the composer Mira Calix, This Heat drummer Charles Hayward and many others. Recording as Hunteress marks a turning point for Laura, a cue to conjure a mix of ‘spellbinding synth dervishes and achingly raw, crepuscular hymns’ which have been broadcast on BBC 6Music, BBC Introducing and The Wire Magazine’s Resonance FM Show.
