Dustan Townsend, better known as Fish in a Birdcage, has written his own rules since 2014. Rooted in his upbringing, Dusty's mother imparted the fundamental rule #1, "Be Safe," and more rules followed with time. Reflecting this ethos, Dusty’s compositions are similarly titled a "rule." We’ve now reached “Rule #36 - Long Way from Home,” an experimental cello-rock song that grapples with the concept of people focusing on the wrong things that take away from the "home" they had envisioned. Expanding on this, Dusty relays “This rule was inspired by the concept of reimagining our world by prioritizing quality of life, physical and mental health, and environmental conditions over traditional metrics like GDP and profits. What would our "home" look like if we focused on human values instead?" The song, which was produced by Howard Redekopp (Mother Mother, Tegan and Sara), features a driving bass line with urgent drums and Fish in a Birdcage's signature cello embellishments.
