Dustan Townsend, better known as Fish in a Birdcage, has written his own rules since 2014. Rooted in his upbringing, Dusty's mother imparted the fundamental rule #1, "Be Safe," and more rules followed with time. Reflecting this ethos, Dusty’s compositions are similarly titled a "rule." We’ve now reached “Rule #37 - Mentors,” the title track for his new album: Mentors. The new record draws from the deep well of experience that the Canadian singer-songwriter has amassed over his impressive career thus far, packing decades of wisdom and learnings into a swooning, gorgeous folk-pop framework that’s as intriguingly complex as it is instantly appealing. Dusty explains that “The main guiding force behind this album is the idea of mentorship. If the other albums were about stories, these represent lessons." On track "Rule #37 - Mentors," we are transported to what feels like another era - a beautiful Baroque-style elegant song that teaches us to surround ourselves with those who bring inspiration & to embrace our differences ("you'll find meaning / break your ceiling / moving passed the mold"). The track gorgeously highlights Dusty's impressive cello skills & even features one of his mentors on the instrument, Natalie Haas. The entire album was produced by Howard Redekopp (Mother Mother, Tegan and Sara) & is for fans of Mother Mother, Rio Romeo, & Will Wood.
