When it comes to Fata Morgana: Dawn, you’ve never heard St. Lucia like this before. The fifth album from Jean-Philip Grobler’s long-running alt-pop project with his wife Patti Beranek expands the band’s sound in massive and widescreen fashion—encompassing psychedelic pop, the gritty pre-’80s dance music of the NYC punk-rock scene, the cinematic sweep of classic film scores, and much more. As a band, St. Lucia have always been focused on taking their listeners on a journey, and Fata Morgana: Dawn is unquestionably the headiest trip they’ve cooked up yet. The easy and all-in-it shake of “Pie in the Sky” was written in early 2020 just before the pandemic, borne out of the live-band session that kickstarted work on Fata Morgana way back when. “There was this group of songs that felt very different from anything I'd done before,” he recalls. “I was very excited about that, and it felt appropriate for them to be recorded with the whole band, because it's a certain energy that you can't recreate by yourself.” Thematically, the song represents growth: “Blossoming from a seed, to a little plant, into this flower that maybe you’ve been waiting your whole life to change into.”
