Born in Auckland, NZ, Alisa Xayalith is a daughter of refugees from Laos who grew up listening to big voices like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston. These vocalists propelled Alisa to reach for big melodies and became the identifying backbone of her previous band, "The Naked and Famous". Alisa is now in a new era of life, influenced by Feist, Bone Iver, Fiona Apple, and more, as well as Japanese Breakfast, Mitski, Deb Never, Joji, Nikki and Aubrey Nuna as a huge champion of Asian artists. Coming out with her debut album, she explores love. Questioning what it means to her and how she found it in other people as well as herself, whether good or bad. “Ordinary love” is the song that kicked off this album, my flag in the sand. I wrote it with Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Mona Khoshoi and Bill Maybury in London. Tyler Spry and Harry Charles helped finish production on this one in LA which is when I decided to officially enlist both of them to work with me across the rest of the songs on my project. I've had a fairly complicated relationship with ‘love’ and what I think it's supposed to look like. Mistaking the polarizing, emotional highs and lows for the norm and questioning how an offering of love from someone that is effortless, honest and easy feels extremely foreign to someone like me. I’ve lived a complicated life, everything regarding having a sense of stability and security has always been an upward battle and fight. This song is like a coming of age story of finding love for myself. ‘Ordinary love’ feels like my own kind of coming of age story. The unfolding of something very real and feeling confused by how uncomplicated it can be when I’ve mostly known and lived the opposite." Says Alisa
