The songs Morningsiders recorded last summer as part of the 'Oddfellows' EP are all traditional folk songs, some of them over two hundred years old. These aren't really covers, because there are no 'original' versions, and oftentimes different variants end up sounding completely different in terms of melodies, chords, lyrics, and stories. There is an interesting history to how variants move around geographically, from France to the UK, from Scotland to Ireland, from the British Isles to New England and Appalachia, often through the oral tradition. While Morningsiders are known for a more Pop approach to folk music (think Stomp and Holler), their popularity (218M Career streams, 59k Spotify followers) allows them to lend credence to the importance of history and context. 'Never Had But One True Love', the focus track on this EP, is a song about someone whose lover dies. He visits her grave, and she chastises him for not moving on. The words and arrangement for this song were changed heavily from the original, much like all the songs on the 'Oddfellows' EP that this single is a part of. On this song Morningsiders choose to reveal themselves within a traditional folk practice by tapping into the idea of giving consent to someone to move on.
