My Marilyn

My Marilyn

Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) established herself as a shining star, accomplished motion picture actress, and historical figure. She continues to illuminate the world and fascinate young people with her remarkable story and still inspires us to project our own subjective interpretations onto her extraordinary life. Marilyn was greatly misunderstood during her lifetime. Obsessively driven to evolve into a serious dramatic artist, she risked her career by rebelling against her movie studio and rejecting its imposed direction. She loved to discuss literature and acting theory and was a passionate jazz fan. In fact she never went anywhere without her record player and a stack of LPs by Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. She once cited Ella's duo recording with Ellis Larkins as one of her favourite records ever. Ella remembered how Marilyn had managed to have her booked at a Hollywood nightclub (that usually did not invite African American artists) and got her an overwhelming press attention by visiting the club every night. In Ella's words: "That was the last time I ever had to play a small jazz club again. She was a remarkable woman, ahead of her times, and she did not know it." On the occasion of Marilyn's 75th birthday, Swiss musician David Klein decided to honor this extraordinary woman with a fine jazz homage to some of her film songs. An excellent tenor player who performed with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Billy Cobham, Kenny Clarke and others. For "My Marilyn" he chose a top-notch jazz trio from New York (Mulgrew Miller was the piano player of choice for James Moody, Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Bennie Wallace, Donald Byrd and many others) and a vocalist that he is familiar with since his earliest childhood: his mother Miriam. A well-known jazz singer in the 60s and 70s and admired for her Billie Holiday interpretations, Miriam Klein has recorded and performed with the likes of Roy Eldridge, Dexter Gordon, Roland Hanna, Slide Hampton and others. This is a welcome opportunity to meet her again in a marvellous, swinging tribute to a great woman. "My Marilyn" is presented in with a beautiful 24 page booklet with many rare photos. "Dear David, I love your CD, and know Marilyn would have gotten a big kick out of hearing it (maybe she still does)" (Jane Russell, co-star in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"). "I know she'd appreciate what you are doing with this CD" (Jack Cardiff, cinematographer). "David Klein's wonderful CD evokes and underscores her performances. An elegant tribute to a wonderful woman, a triumph and a treasure" (Eli Wallach, co-star in "The Misfits")
