Marmalsana

Marmalsana

Marmalsana is a trio that brings together Burkhard Beins (percussion), Maurice Louca (acoustic quarter-tone guitar), and Tony Elieh (acoustic bass guitar). Based in Berlin and active in the free improv and experimental scenes of the city, Beins, Elieh, and Louca have spent the last decade or so developing various projects with local and international musicians. Marmalsana is their first collaboration, one for which they decided to rely on the use of acoustic instruments only, without resorting to amplification, and employing extended techniques and objects to produce soundscapes of drones, textures, melodies, and polyrhythms. The resulting album fuses different influences. Elieh having moved to Berlin from Beirut and Louca from Cairo, both musicians developed new techniques inspired by the musical richness and encounters that Berlin offers to artists. Beins is one of the founders of the Echtzeitmusik movement, which has influenced many musicians and scenes around the world. Marmalsana reflects these backgrounds, styles, and influences, fueled by the expertise and experience of each musician. They succeed in merging their individual contributions into a unified whole, iridescently moving between distinct placements of sound and moments beyond instrumental recognisability. Their journey traverses between Beirut, Berlin, and Cairo, forming a nomadic musical language. Burkhard Beins is a composer-performer known for his work in experimental music and sound art, particularly for his innovative use of percussion combined with selected sound objects. Additionally, he works with live electronics and analog synthesizers, plays bass guitar, and has conceived several sound installations. Maurice Louca is an Egyptian musician and composer who recently released his fourth studio album, Saet El Hazz (Northern Spy/Sub Rosa, 2021), along with numerous other releases for bands and collaborations he is part of, including the Dwarfs of East Agouza, Elephantine, Karkhana, and Lekhfa. Tony Elieh is one of the pioneers of rock and experimental music in Lebanon, being a founding member of the first post-rock group in post-war Lebanon, The Scrambled Eggs. Since then, he has developed his unique electric bass skills in various groups and styles of music, collaborating with groups such as Karkhana, Calamita, and Wormholes Electric.
