From the artists: I was really happy when Tristan told me about his idea about writing for solo Vibraphone. As a percussionist it’s really rare that you get the chance that someone writes contemporary repertoire specifically for vibraphone, even though it’s such a warm and unconventional sound. So a few weeks later Tristan sent me midi demos and sheet music which I then tried to interpret quite freely. I actually didn’t listen back to the demos often, instead I tried to add some personal sound to the tunes without, however, neglecting Tristan’s sonic vision and style. Working together with Tristan is always a great pleasure, there’s a lot of mutual respect and common interests but most of all he’s become a good friend as well. -Arthur Clees, Luxembourg, 2024 These pieces were inspired by and are dedicated to my friend and bassist Maxime, who introduced me to his jazz fusion band Jambal in 2021. Maxine sadly had his life cut short in a tragic car accident months after we had recorded the first full length Jambal album together. I particularly miss Maxime’s combination of playfulness, openness, and taste in music. These pieces, performed by Arthur Clees of Jambal on vibraphone, are an attempt to capture the mystery and newness of our musical explorations during our collaboration but also the feelings of nostalgia and distance I feel when recalling them. I hope to carry Maxime’s adventurous and open spirit with me for my whole life and these compositions are my thank you to him for this beautiful gift.
