With roots in Houston, Texas, atmospheric/lo-fi artist Samuel Proffitt, grew up entrenched in various genres from screamo and punk to indie, folk, and jazz; however, his musical origins lie in his own writing, poetry, and interest in philosophy. I wrote “Lusya” about Nabokov and the story of his first love, Valentina Shulgina, or Lusya, along with one of the short works inspired by her and their separation: “A Letter that Never Reached Russia.” There’s an intense beauty and melancholy found in the story, yet framed without despondency. The song gathered dust in my computer over the last five years, until I was in LA in the Fall. Working with Wayne and YahYah, the final touches on the instrumental were made and using some fragments of my short stories and poems, the lyrics crafted. The admixture of the live strings with Bailey’s stunning voice and my composition allows for the song to breathe in a way that made the five year wait worth every minute.
