On a whim, singer-songwriter Garrett Kato quit his job and left to Australia to pursue his ‘musical dreams’. Making a living busking in Byron Bay, and performing five gigs a week in anyplace with a stage his eventually caught the attention of some of Australia’s biggest superstars, who both became fans after witnessing him perform on the street. Garrett has since collaborated with a string of buzzing Australian acts such as Ziggy Alberts, Kyle Lionheart, Pierce Brothers and Riley Pearce. Speaking on his forthcoming EP "Kumamoto" - "The country was on fire and soon after, a worldwide pandemic hit that changed the world for the foreseeable future," recounts Garrett. "During these times I found myself fixated on the world around me; sick with worry for my family and friends. I soon realized I needed to look within to find any peace, this is where iPhone voice memos started to form into songs and stories. I began thinking of what generations before us went through, about my grandparents; victims of internment camps of world war two. How strong people can be, despite overwhelming odds. Looking at my kids I could see generations of triumphs, mistakes and love in their faces passed down like genetic blueprints. The songs embody growth and perspective that wouldn't be possible without these past years. "Kumamoto" is me for now where the Kato story began in southern Japan."
