Fun... provides six songs of the Big Boys at their best, taking their then-groundbreaking funk and punk combinations to even stronger heights. New drummer Fred Schultz slots into the band just fine, while producer Spot brings out all of the members' individual strengths to a tee, not to mention contributing "Jello" and "Apolitical." The band comes up with a thicker sound all around this time, everything upfront and all the more cutting, with Gates' bass really standing out and Kerr's guitar equally snarling. Turner's vocals still tread that line between creeping tension and free-for-all yells, putting the two together perfectly for the opening "Nervous," a two-minute rip with music that's just as appropriate. Able to zap out hyperspeed hardcore with the best of them, as always, the Boys save their most distinct statement for an utterly fitting cover version of Kool and the Gang's "Hollywood Swinging." Fired up with all the considerable power the Boys brought to the rest of their music, the song features an accompanying three-man guest horn section, providing extra swing while Turner changes some lyrics to reflect his own inspiration from the Gang. The end vocal chants and shouts from everyone on hand capture the uplifting spirit of that band just as much as it does the positive energy of the Boys -- a perfect synthesis all around.
