Artists are familiar with the process of mining life’s hardest moments for the sake of their craft. But what might seem self-indulgent is really an act of catharsis for the purpose of sharing something beautiful with the world, and that is just what Abby Sage has done on her forthcoming EP Fears of Yours & Mine. Above water, each song documents some moment in a break-up, but look below the surface, and the EP is a lesson in growth, overcoming fear, and setting an impeccable mood. As Abby says, “I called the project Fears of Yours and Mine because the whole project follows a close relationship I had with someone, playing upon his fears and moments of doubt and those that I held. When fear begins to confine any relationship it feels trapping. My fears within myself and the outward fears of the relationship and its progression ultimately led to its downfall and the creation of this project.” Musically, Abby’s breathy, textured voice guides us along a chill-wave singer-songwriter journey with deeper nods to indie pop and bedroom soul. It’s pure, sonic bliss from start to finish and based on the subject matter, Abby’s most intimate and vulnerable release to date. Like many songwriters, Abby started playing at an early age, writing and recording tracks with her musician dad, as well as accompanying him to all his gigs. By the start of high school, she was beginning to post her music to soundcloud in secret — that is until she accidentally released a track publicly. The next morning, her phone was flooded with messages, and like an act of divine intervention, Abby says, “it’s what sparked the confidence to keep going.” A few years later, during one of her trips back to her hometown in Canada, she was connected to a group of producers through a mutual family friend. After a successful test run in the studio, Abby and producer Jeff Hazin continued their creative partnership, and he is now a key collaborator for all of Abby’s work.
