Crowd Pleaser, Pt. 1

Crowd Pleaser, Pt. 1

Coffee is a tongue in cheek dive into things not going your way, embracing that you have to make your own happiness. Foley are yearning for new experience, but worried to fall into bad habits - on their first collaborative feature, with Brooklyn-based artist Tim Atlas. The track explores how easily the excitement of new things can lead us astray (“If I leave the house, I’ll fall in love again”), and when we get lost in the moment and carried away by day dreams (“On holiday a great escape, I’m in my head all day”). Foley traces the inevitability of falling into those old ways (“giving into habits that I thought were past me”), even when we are trying with our whole selves to improve our lives. The chorus is a total release - realising that sometimes when we are trying the hardest and it isn’t working, we just have to let go and let it happen. The pitched hook describes the final nail in the coffin to take a break and not take life so seriously. (“I bought a coffee but it's cold, I think it's my time to go lay down”). The frantic, driving production by longtime collaborator Wells* echoes the short-term outbursts of excitement that are so addictive to us. Coffee is an over-excited, bubbling track filled with intensity and obsession of thought. “This song is a frenzy of thoughts and total chaos. We really wanted to capture the way it feels to be questioning your actions and relationships, and pushing yourself as much as you can to be a better person - to no avail. In those moments where something as ridiculous as your coffee order being wrong can push you over the edge, it might be a sign to chill out and not take life so seriously…!”
