Colour Grid is a response to artist Paul Klee’s painting New Harmony and his theory about how certain colours behaved in conjunction with other colours and formed visual chords. Inspired by Painter Robert Delaunay’s theory of colour, Klee formulated his own theory early in his tenure at the Weimar Bauhaus in the 1920s, and many of the rectangular-grid works painted during this time use the word ‘harmony’ in their titles. Intended as a response to the title of the painting, my composition is intentionally driven more by harmony than by melody; I wanted to explore harmonic movement that wasn’t strictly governed by a clear tonal centre and cadential motion. As with many through- composed pieces in jazz, it relies on a simple melodic motif that is transposed and augmented as it makes its way through the harmony.
