On Todd Sickafoose’s “Boom Bust Startup Ruin”, a simple, bluesy melody develops slowly. There is rhythmic tension as swing and 6/8 feels rub against each other. Soon, Ben Goldberg takes a wide-eyed clarinet solo, backed by a thickening soup of ensemble ostinatos. Everything coalesces into a series of increasingly dreamy variations, heats to a rolling boil, then crashes back into 12/8. There is unbridled jubilation but maybe some chaotic unraveling too? The opening melody returns but with a sense that something's gone terribly wrong. The rhythms pull apart and Jenny Scheinman's pizzicato violin grabs the remaining moment by the throat
