Bang Bang

Bang Bang

After two successful singles on his label Stargazing Records, Determind decided that it was time to step up once more and bring something special to his audience: an entry in the musician’s catalogue that would stand as his defining sonic statement and signature sound. To focus on this project, he decided not to release any music in 2021 to prepare a 6-track album with bonus material that will be released in 2022. A release that captures the defining signature sound is probably one of the hardest things to achieve in music production. Florian is drawing on his background in the rave scene 10 years ago to craft it. Listeners will hear staples from the genre, like old-school breakbeats, acid house sounds, or rave vocal samples alongside percussion and brass instrument sounds inspired from the dub music that characterized Determind’s musical alter ego, Krysalize. Listeners will be able to recognize scratch samples used in tekno music by the iconic Narkotek, and the more predominant use of vocals, breaks, build-ups, drops used in raggatek and drum & bass music, Determind’s most listened genre till today. Each of these inspirations are integrated on a sound with a strong of house music foundation with a marked development toward the funky, groovy, tribal, Latin, or jack’in house subgenres deeply inspired by artists like Gabry Venus, Block & Crown, Crazibiza, & Simon Fava among others. House music is the perfect structure to explore an eclectic combination of piano chords and soulful vocals from the jazz, spiritual blues that his parents used to spin on when he was a kid. Florian has partnered with featuring vocalist to bring life and soul to the album, the characteristic elements of House music. With this album, Determind wished to keep strengthening his bonds with Saigon’s local scene, his last single with the trumpets virtuoso Juan Anthony Reyes was a meaningful milestone, hence the album has astounding local featuring like Nuce, a Canadian rapper based in Hanoi for a remix of “Lingerie” who interpreted a hip hop song from the rapper Young MC, and with Lonie, a Vietnamese rapper from Saigon, that forge its own original lyrics and style with “In The Club”, representing for his crew: D.C.O.D. And again with Florian’s piano teacher from Cuba, El Narra, for a stunning original Latin house song “El Boom Boom of My Heart”. As a result, the album brings a brilliant diversity into a consistent, solid, professional, remarkable piece of music. Bringing forward a remix of the worldwide hit from the ’70s, with “You Really Got A Hold On Me” by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, interpreted by Carolina Padrón, a professional singer and songwriter from Ecuador, and with “Bang Bang”, a remix of the Chinese singer Betty Chung’s cover from the world-famous song by Nancy Sinatra interpreted by Nguyen Phuong Trang. Furthermore, an original creation with “No Fear”, an acid house track sampling Nina Simone's speeches as a tribute to one of most inspirational pianist artists, another gem on this album. “Bang Bang”, the flagship of the album that inspired the art cover, is emphasizing another signature element of Determind: the storytelling and cinematographic approach to his music. Determind’s dad often mentioned to him that his music sounded like movie scores. And that is very true for this track that was inspired by Tarantino’s movie Kill Bill. Determind recreated the western feeling with the guitar and whistling sound but arranged it into an Asian atmosphere. That's why the cover is an illustration of Lady Snowblood, the famous Japanese character who inspired Tarantino’s movie: Kill Bill. The Album was produced & mixed by Determind in 2021 and Mastered by Attiss Ngo at Sao Tho Studio, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Art cover was made by Jerzy Kaczmarek.
