Adriana: Her Portrait, Her Life, Her Music

Adriana: Her Portrait, Her Life, Her Music

Thanks to Paulus Matthijsz’ (1613/14–1684) extensive dedication to Adriana, we know that she played trio sonatas by Uccellini, Merula and Buonamente, among others, while Jacob Backer’s portrait shows a music edition by Salamone Rossi. On the CD, masterpieces by these Italian composers alternate with Dutch compositions that often sound strikingly Italian. Variation works by Jacob van Noordt, Paulus Matthijsz and Pieter de Vois are in the style of Jacob van Eyck, two of whose pieces unexpectedly ended up in the Fluit-hemel. Adriana was the daughter of an Amsterdam lawyer. She had a turbulent life at the hands of a husband who drove his parents-in-law to despair, drained the family capital and promptly went bankrupt. Adriana died at the young age of 36, after giving birth to her ninth child. Thiemo Wind describes her life against the background of daily life, religion and culture in 17th-century Amsterdam.
