The band Savage Lands was founded in 2022 and is co-operated by Megadeth’s Dirk Verbeuren and the musician-turned-activist Sylvian Demercastel. As a band, Savage Lands is actually a nonprofit and they have managed to preserve 100,000 square feet of Costa Rican forest with the money made from their music. Savage Lands is the non-profit project (and the line-up-changing all-star band with band members from Sepultura, Heilung, Gojira, Lamb of God, Textures, Obituary, The Gathering and Testament) of Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren and Costa Rican guitarist Sylvain Demercastel. The project aims to raise awareness and money for global reforestation. Using their own royalties, donations and other fundraising efforts, the organization builds nature reserves, establishes green zones and purchases forest areas for other conservation projects. In July 2024 the French festival Hellfest (where Savage Lands performed on the main stage) donated one million euros to support reforestation in Costa Rica and Europe. Savage Lands have officially released three singles so far (‘The Last Howl’, ‘Black Rock Heart’ and ‘No Remedy’) that show what SOH visitors can expect: furious and melodic modern metal with an irresistable groove.
