They became his main band after he quit the latter. Contrary to popular belief, the band were not named after the Deep Purple album Machine Head. Shifted from groove/thrash metal to a more nu-metal oriented sound for two of their albums (The Burning Red and Supercharger), then back to a groove/thrash metal sound (Through the Ashes of Empires, The Blackening, Unto the Locust, Bloodstone & Diamonds). In 2018, they mixed the groove/thrash metal sound with nu-metal on Catharsis. Phil Demmel briefly filled in for Ahrue Luster in 2001, but did not further pursue Machine Head at the time. He later joined the band on a permanent basis in 2003. Chris, Matt, Corey, and Frederic were filling in on the Black Crusade European Tour for Phil, who had to leave the tour early to deal with the death of his father. In 2019, the band announced a tour in celebration of the Burn My Eyes album for its 25th anniversary.
