tender spring is the lofi moniker of David Tanton, 1/3 of indie pop band Afternoon Bike Ride. Through a series of solo EPs and collaborative albums (largely released through Lofi Girl and Chillhop Music's ambient sub-label Memoir Music) tender spring's sound can be described as going on a long walk with friends. Recording some nature sounds (stepping on a tree branch, a bird perched overhead) before making a bon fire and welcoming the quiet aspects of nighttime. Lofi folk, or ambient lofi, or neoclassical piano, or straight-up jazz, or genreless electronic, either way: tender spring's sound is sure to bring comfort. Cozy, care-free, and calming. tender spring's newest album is, in a way, his debut full-length release. Having released two LPs in 2020 and 2021, both projects largely featured friends and collaborators at the forefront. While plenty of guest musicians and instrumentalists make appearances on this album as well, this self-titled release (split in half as side a and side b like a cassette) feels more like tender spring's opus. Twelve genreless tracks blending jazz with ambient and folk with bedroom and lofi with everything in between. Horns and sax come and go. Tape loops, door creaks, crickets, and live drums. It's all organic, natural, and tender as can be.
