Whirling Kalapas is the one-off acoustic project of Uday Benegal, Sankarshan “Shanks” Kini, and Ashwin Andrew. Uday Benegal was the front-man of the hugely popular Rock Machine, founded in 1984, who found success with their all-original albums Rock’n’Roll Renegade (1988) and The Second Coming (1990). In 1993, Rock Machine changed their name to Indus Creed and began experimenting with Indian instruments, such as the tabla and sarangi. Their music videos Pretty Child, Trapped, and Sleep were hugely popular and won MTV Awards. Disillusioned with the local music industry, Uday Benegal moved to New York in late 1999 and founded Alms for Shanti, who released an eponymous album in 2000. Uday Benegal relocated back to Mumbai in 2008 and reformed Indus Creed with its former band members. In June 2011, Indus Creed was inducted into the Indian Recording Arts Academy Hall of Fame. The band found new success with their album Evolve (2012) and took home Best Band, Best Keyboardist, and Best Drummer at the Jack Daniel’s JD Rock Awards 2013. Uday now lives in Goa, composing for projects and occasionally performing with his former bandmates. Shanks is a multi-instrumentalist who toured the world with Kailash Kher’s celebrated fusion band Kailasa and now plays with Bombay Acoustic People and Passenger Revelator. Ashwin Andrews is an accomplished pianist who regularly plays bass and drums with Passenger Revelator and Orange Street.
