Haitian-American musician, producer, and DJ Bapari has announced a new EP Oasis, out 25th October 2023 via Halcyon Veil. Today, they’ve released a first look at the EP with new single “Outskirts”, featuring the soaring vocals of Egyptian singer Kida over their industrial, glitchy trills, creating the atmosphere of what Bapari describes as “an abandoned modern city in the middle of the desert”. Oasis is an exploration of textures, as Bapari attempts to reconstruct materials like glass, metal, or concrete in a sonic dimension. The EP follows their intuition in creating synesthetic translations of hyper-specific atmospheres: solitude, underground tunnels, New York City in autumn, industrial landscapes overtaken by nature. The process “felt like sculpting”, describes Bapari, “I was chipping away… trying to come up with sounds or tones translated from visual influences I found emotionally intriguing.” The EP came out of a period of grief and turbulence, from a house fire, to insecure housing, to losing a loved one. The power of Bapari’s emotions hits hard on “Void”, made in the face of grief. The track takes on a celestial atmosphere, mirroring their analogy of the loss feeling tantamount to a star collapsing in on itself. “Void” showcases Bapari’s skill at twisting traditional dance beats, modifying the typical 4-on-the-floor techno tempo, and skipping the 4th kick to create a sonic void. The featured artists on the album were unplanned; rather came from an organic collaboration of friends uplifting each other. Both on “Sore”, which features singer Lolahol (aka Lourdes Leon), and “Outskirts” featuring Kida, the singers’ own emotional connections to the music prompted them to lend their voices. Already making waves in the electronic scene, Bapari is a regular at Basement, Elsewhere, Nowadays, Paragon, and Bossa Nova and further afield they’ve shared lineups with Shygirl, Yves Tumor, Maya Jane Coles, Tygapaw, Doss, Coucou Chloe, Bearcat, Total Freedom, Mike Q, and River Moon. Their latest headlining Boiler Room set is available here: https://boilerroom.tv/recording/bapari-23. Last summer, they released their EP Stamina which was named a best track of 2021 by Resident Advisor. In W Magazine, Euphoria star Hunter Schafer called Bapari an inspiration and “an incredible Black trans DJ, who is blowing up right now,” while co-star Barbie Ferreira chose Bapari to play their L.A. party with YSL and Flaunt magazine. Bapari is also a three-time Boiler Room performer and has hosted the monthly show Puffy on NTS Radio since 2019. Their music was featured in recent campaigns for the fashion brands i.am.gia and Barragan, the smart ring company Oura, and the NFT platform Foundation. They have created New York Fashion Week scores for designers No Sesso and Helena Eisenhart. Bapari pushes experimentation within electronic music to the edge, exploring all outcomes, from unique underground club tracks to evocative sonic landscapes. Oasis showcases Bapari’s impeccable skills both as a musician, but also as a sonic artist.
