Småland Project - Scapes

Småland Project - Scapes

In 2014 a Swedish guitarist/composer heard a stunning duo piece for clarinet and vacuum cleaner by an Iranian clarinetist/composer on Soundcloud. The swede immediately reacts with a cheering comment. Two years later Stefan Levin picks up Soheil Peyghambari at the tiny train station in Högsby, Småland, Sweden. In his left hand Peyghambari carries his fishing rod in the right his clarinet. That is the beginning of a longer musical journey together. Småland Project – Scapes. The classical improvisation duo Nyman/Levin (Hans Nyman & Stefan Levin) released their first album ”Trip” in 2014 and has since then released two more albums together with several productions for film and dance. For their fourth album they decided to invite guests. In the late summer of 2019 the duo met the clarinetist Soheil Peyghambari in Stefan’s country house in Småland, southern Sweden. A couple of days in stillness, seeking common musical and personal ground and looking for new musical rooms (more than traditional tunes and compositions). This stillness mixed with conversations, picturing the thoughts of art and text, impressions from nature were to be the base for this album. Left out is notation, pre-decided structures or genre formulas – everything was influenced by the flowing Scapes of the surroundings. After those magical days the trio went straight up to Levin studios in Stockholm and, inspired of the days of stillness, recorded this album in one day - in the very centre of a busy Stockholm. And what a bless: the second day we had the swedish folk-flutist playing with us (at the end of the album) - that guest appearance opened up a new world - that still is to be discovered. The influences from different genres are many: Jazz, classical contemporary music, folk music, minimalism. Similar artists: Egberto Gismonti, John Surman, Anour Brahem, Rabih Abou Khalil, Mette Henriette, and the Tarkovski quartet.
