After her major label debut Waves & the Both of Us was released in May 2008, it seemed as though Charlotte Sometimes (whose real name is Jessica Poland) was poised to become a big success. Although her single “How I Could Just Kill a Man” received a reasonable amount of play on VH1 and her album was named an Editor’s Choice on iTunes, Charlotte was unceremoniously dropped from the Geffen label. However, rather than being deterred, the singer-songwriter returned to her roots and self-released her newest EP Sideways. The title of this EP is one ultimately appropriate to Charlotte’s current situation. From the on-top-of-the-world, takes-no-prisoner girl we met in 2008, our view is toppled to illustrate an exposed and no longer naïve woman. Rather than the angst-filled lyrics and generally poppy songs delivered to audiences with Waves & the Both of Us, a reasonably more mature-sounding and uninhibited Charlotte emerges on Sideways. While a pop influence is indeed present, Charlotte experiments with genre more than any of her previous releases. Charlotte Sometimes sounds completely different while possessing attributes audiences heard before.
