Serious Business

I was there in the earthquake of '89 But I did not feel a thing It was five o'clock in the afternoon When I laid down to sleep And I dreamed the dawn of the Chanticleer But I could not hear him sing Did he miss the sun, was he so far gone When winter turned to spring And now that he's much older Who will open up their wings On every new year And federal holiday The summer trees would hang so low In the garden where I stayed I let my doors open to the wind When no one knew my name And I'd sit and stare so unaware I was waiting out my time And the paint would crack in the morning light When I would lose my mind And as it got much colder I'd raise my head and sing On every new year And federal holiday What changes time would bring Should the seasons change again, my friend Or the planets realign I'm still the very same person But I'll be different next time And should you catch me smiling Will you open up your wings On every new year And federal holiday
