Winona Oak has returned with a new four-song EP, titled Salt, where bereavement opens a door to never-before-discussed feelings about her physical and emotional states. “I wanted to write about topics that I wanted to get out of my system, but I hadn't felt brave enough to do when I was younger,” Winona says. “Every song on this EP has been like a therapy session. Once you open that box of trauma, everything falls out.” On the quietly empowering track “It’s Not My Fault,” Winona reassures her younger self in a series of repeated affirmations that violating events in her past were ultimately outside of her control. “I have always wanted to take this pain and turn it into the song of a weapon, against all that happened,” Winona says. “When I performed it, I just wanted to cry, because I know that so many people have experienced similar things and they need to hear that it's not their fault. They need to hear it a thousand times — it took me so long to understand that.”
