Ozumba Mbadiwe Remix EP (Remix)

In the years since the release of Reekado Banks’ Billboard-charting debut album dubbed Spotlight, the Nigerian international pop star has grown as a human and an artist. Amongst many other things, in 2019, Reekado Banks conducted a one-month solo tour across cities in the United States which was followed by the release of RORA, his record-smashing single that got listed by Apple Music as one of the best songs of 2019 and 2020. In 2019, Reekado Banks served a potent reminder of his timeless talent with Off The Record, a smartly collected collection of seven songs that mined his Nigerian identity for a global audience and doubled down on his teasing flow and magnetic presence. Much of the time since then has been spent working on charitable courses such as his contribution to “Raise Your Hand,” a song released with the Global Partnership for Education in support of child education that featured a cross-selection of guests like Senegalese icon, Youssou N’dour, and Teni Da Entertainer. For his first solo release of 2020, Reekado Banks offered a suave reminder of the qualities that make Reekado Banks a special talent on “Ozumba Mbadiwe.” Produced by P.Priime, “Ozumba Mbadiwe” boasted an ephemeral sheen that made it a perfect fit for a variety of option and released on the one-year anniversary of 20/10/20, the single touched on the sorrowful events of that night, pointedly marking en effort to remind the government and Nigerians of the tragedy suffered on that day. Building on the success of the single, Reekado has shared a tape of remixes of “Ozumba Mbadiwe,” connecting with singers from across Africa to make this specially-curated project a truly continental effort. Starting from the Fireboy DML-featuring opener, the vibe of “Ozumba Mbadiwe” is opened up to allow its guests interpret it in their unique ways with Fireboy DML offering a verse about his life changes since enjoying music success and surviving to enjoy the fruits of his success. Ghanaian singer, KIDI, came through with a verse about moving on in spite of the losses of the last two years and raising a glass for the people lost on 20/10/20. Much has been made about the amapiano influence on “Ozumba Mbadiwe'' and, taking things to the homeland of the sub-genre, Reekado links with Lady Du, an Amapiano innovator for a warped remix of the song that sees the track accessorised with glittery keys and a stellar verse by Lady Du. Tanzanian singer, Rayvanny, contributes a sultry verse that sees him sing about achieving all his goals regardless of opposition and wrapping things up, is Elow’n from Ivory Coast. Opening the year with these trans-continental collaborations, Reekado dips into his pan-Africanist impulses while giving new flavours to the much-loved track.
