Marie Rose / Mama Lisa

Following Malaaz's first re-issue on our catalogue, we take you back to Réunion Island in 1976. Additionally, we have uncovered some archival materials, including videos and images. These materials capture the band's inaugural recording. Assisted by the skills of our sound engineer, Neil Combstock, we have meticulously restored these two treasures. The name "Ina Malaaz," inspired by words from Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, translates to "What's new?" The band couldn't have chosen a more fitting name for their project, positioning themselves as true pioneers of their time by blending various sounds from neighboring islands. Malaaz was spearheaded by Patrick Donat, who is recognized as a trailblazer and a significant contributor to the Electric Maloya movement—a fusion of traditional island music and Western instrumentation that emerged in the mid-70s. He was joined by Franck Raholison and Del Rabenja, forming this formidable group of exceptional musicians from Réunion Island and Madagascar. Mama Lisa introduced the group to the Réunionese audience, and both tracks had their accompanying music videos broadcasted on national television.
