I See Ghosts

I See Ghosts

I see ghosts gather for the feast look I see my great great granddad he's a priest Jamaica sugarcane blackening his teeth He is nodding at my great granddad who's a thief And I'm sat here in between look - with my granny in her fancy jewels Who's saying "Don't forget you're grammar schooled Don't forget your dad was to the manor born" And she's on a croquet lawn very manicured I turn, and see my great gramps' feet are manacled And my nana from my mother's side is ducking cannonballs Ducking in to shattered doors And coming back with corpses Twisted and staggering and ashen forms That she's nursing in a front garden With her hands bloody Cursing at the bombardment And her knees muddy Cursing at the bombs popping And the jagged beams And there is Uncle John Cursing at the Japanese Babbling in Ancient Greek in a cold bath With his dogs and his pipe and his old scars What's the matter with him? It's all the noise and the clamour Boys running out the jungle and he has to kill em And every day he wakes aching from the shrapnel in him Till he is an asteroid in blackness that Can't forgive him All my ancestors broken up and strange Some are loving, some are woven up in hate Some are blood and liquor soaked and some are saints Some made their money off of slaves Some are noble as a spade Some are dirt-rich Look among em there are foremen there are servants There are there are Poor Pawn brokers here there are merchants Look, there are sheep farmers there are nurses and all of them are in me All are in me as a bone So never think you know me cos you don't Said all of them are in me All are in me as a bone So never think you know me cos you don't I see ghosts
