Dog or baby is a song about feeling like what you have isn't quite enough and the pretty primordial hunger for something bigger. Could be a successful career that keeps me busy, or a needy dachshund, preferably with long blonde hair and named Honey (I have met this exact dog, she lives in Brooklyn in Prospect Heights and she's sweet as her name). Or a baby, so that all of a sudden, your decision is made and it's going to be around for at least eighteen more years if you're lucky? Basically, dog or baby is my mid-life crisis song, and comes out of conversations with my friends of the same age. It's the voice in my head saying "what's next?"
