On his debut six-track extended play, Soulaar makes a compilation of songs that portray his versatility and depth on the one hand, while also serving as a reflection of his cosmic state of mind. “Floating more than running, I’m sometimes an unapologetic romantic… hopeless. The songs highlight that point I was in my life. Some of the songs were based on the result of real-life situations and happenings and I felt it’s only right to share it with the world.” Soulaar’s Cosmic EP explores themes of love, lust, youthful exuberance, pursuit of happiness, heartbreak, loneliness and craving. The work of art is heavily driven by guitars and keys, and intentionally curated to give the audience a seamless transition through the listening process. A fusion of genres and elements, Soulaar uses the various songs to tell a singular, connected story, portraying a moment in his life when all he needs is love and affection as he wrestles his way through the challenges that come with the path of greatness that he’s chosen. The first track on the EP, and a perfect introduction to what is a compelling selection of songs. Company paints a picture of a man in need of love and good company. On Company, Soulaar is under the spell of his highly desirable muse. He makes promises of love, and while seeking his muse’s attention. The first verse opens with a declarative statement of what she desires, and how far Soulaar is willing to go to get it for her. In the second verse, Soulaar reinforces his emotions, while seeking her trust. Produced by Osadebey with a guitar assist by Clean Bolu, Company is a bold statement of what to expect in the rest of the project. Stand By You follows a similar theme of lust and desire, while also confirming that he’s aware of his muse’s love life. He clearly isn’t afraid to fight for the top spot as he continues to make promises to and high demands from her. Stand By You is a slow burner that is laid on keys and steady drum patterns with intermittent breaks and twists. Soulaar taps Xtreme the Producer and Jay Blakez to deliver an Afro-fusion masterpiece that sits between the worlds of R&B, Soul and Afrobeats. Balance embodies Soulaar’s lust and his willingness to pursue his vain emotions and cravings. Soulaar implores his female muse to continue to impress in her radiance and elegance as she majestically carries herself to the awe of on-lookers. Soulaar’s lyrics paint a picture of a woman whose physical features are worthy to make a sane man lose his mind. Driven by melodic keys and a catchy violin cue, Soulaar creates a tag team of NYRP and Black Culture to deliver what would become one of the most memorable productions in modern Afrobeats, as Soulaar introduces his unique take to the piece, finessing through effortlessly. An upbeat and feel-good joint, Tension is a song of admiration and shout-out to women around the world. Xtreme the Producer dazzles with synthetic keys and Clean Bolu’s solo guitar, riling up Soulaar to deliver this high-energy song. The irregular and rising drum patterns of the song make it a stand-out record on the body of work. Tension explores similar themes earlier stated in other parts of this article. It’s an absolute party starter! Another upbeat song, and a product of the duo of Soulaar and Xtreme the Producer, Soulaar continues to be a loverboy as he sings about craving love and attention. Faraway is an Afro-House record with a catchy hook that stays in a loop in the listener’s memory, moments after encountering the song. One of the more soulful songs on the project, On Need Nobody, Soulaar unleashes all of his emotions on this low-tempo Afrobeats joint. Soulaar proves himself to be an advocate of monogamy as he promises to “need nobody” but her.
