September 2023 marks a year since the death of 22-year-old Iranian Mahsa Amini while in custody in Tehran. She had been arrested and accused of violating strict dress code laws. To mark this significant and tragic anniversary Iranian-German artist Pari Eskandari announces the release of a new track entitled Chador. Released on Tricky’s False Idols label, Chador is an evocative exploration of the struggle of women living in Iran, as well as Pari’s relationship with her homeland, and it exemplifies her Persian musical influences and unique sound. The release is accompanied by a powerful video depicting a female initiation ritual that is designed, says Pari, ‘to elevate the women from the ordinary to the sublime’, and is expressed through dance. ‘This piece,’ she continues ‘is for the women in Iran who risk their lives every day.’ Pari spent her early childhood in Iran before fleeing with her parents to Germany. She grew up in Düsseldorf and studied at the Academy of Arts. The multi-disciplinary artist, now based in Berlin, is currently working on a forthcoming album. Fifteen years ago, Pari was arrested in Iran for not wearing a headscarf. ‘Since [my arrest], I have been deeply connected to the pain of women living in Iran, what they go through and the danger they are exposed to,’ she says. ‘Honored be those who fight and fought for Woman, Life, Freedom following the death of Mahsa Amini at the hands of the Iranian Police for Religious Morality.’ Chador is released on False Idols, the UK-based label founded by Tricky and home to artists including Marta, the late Lee Scratch Perry and Tricky himself.
