Following last year’s ‘Kaijupop’ debut LP released on Gang of Ducks, eclectic producer Soft-Bodied Humans returns with a new 50-minute 25-second track: ‘Bass symphony, take 1’. Unlike Soft-Boded Humans’ previous grime or dancehall-tinged collaborations with MCs such as Swordman Kitala or sbk, ‘Bass symphony…’ is a shapeshifting, head-wrecking piece of modern composition inspired in equal parts by Terry Riley, OG Metallica bassist Cliff Burton and the Amen break. In its undiluted form this epic construction builds with rousing drum rolls, crunching metal guitar and imperious pop synth, until the track goes into overdrive with drum ‘n’ bass rhythms and a rampaging, monstrous synth bass that lays waste to everything in sight. By the time that bass demon stutters to climax the aural landscape has shifted once again, with ambient drones whirling around the sounds of far-away explosions and the robotic shrieks of synth risers full of malign intent. If that sounds like a lot to digest, then ease your mind into the sonic bloodbath with this 7-minute ‘single’ edit, out 1 March. The full-length ‘Bass symphony, take 1’ will drop on 29 March. Praise for Soft-Bodied Humans “Samples of Japanese monster films and unmatchable lyrical prowess accompany infectiously energetic instrumentals.” – The Wire “****-the-club up mid-00s grime riffs and late-00s dubstep kickdrums that gobble up all the air in the room” – The Quietus “Just like the kaiju that inspired them, these beats clang and scrape when they don’t rock the earth beneath their feet, blazing like towering infernos at the mercy of the gigantic beasts whose presence is clear in the snippets of newsreel that occasionally force their way through the maelstrom.” – Underscore Magazine “Wonky, acerbic, bass-heavy hip-hop” – Pan African Music
