When you’re young, the end of a relationship can feel devastating, but after a while there’s always the feeling that someone else will come along. But later in life, there’s a sense that maybe there won’t be the case. The stronger a relationship has been, particularly if it has been a long one, the more difficult it is to imagine it being “replaced”. So in a way this is a love song. Although there’s a sadness to it, the underlying meaning is that nothing will could seem as good “after you”. It was written towards the end of a relationship - perhaps it was predictive. It’s in the form of a traditional jazz ballad, which gives it a nostalgic quality. This is enhanced by the use of suspended harmonies, which add to the yearning mood of the words. It’s long melodic lines are hard to sustain, but are performed most beautifully in this recording by Joanna Eden, supported with great sensitivity by Nikki Iles on piano, who also gives a masterfully understated but expressive solo.
