‘A Collective Memoir’ compilation is a sound research project commissioned by Urvakan with the support of Goethe-Institut. It archives a selection of recordings contributed by some of the artists from Armenia, Georgia, Russia and Ukraine who were meant to play at Urvakan 2020—a festival that never really happened due to the well-known events of that year. The artists were asked to explore how ‘collective memories’ could be embodied in sound by using some of the aural techniques capable of evoking such memories in the subconscious of people from locations fairly different, but someway similar in their cultural code. The submissions we received were not only inspiring and diverse, but also quite accurately fell in line with Urvakan's declared focus on "hauntological" music practices, referenced in the festival's name itself—’urvakan’ is the Armenian word for ghost, phantom or spirit.
