Aloha is an essence of being: it is love, peace, compassion, and a mutual understanding of respect. Aloha means living in harmony with the people and land around you with mercy, sympathy, grace, and kindness. Close your eyes and think of the most beautiful place on earth, and almost, as if by instinct, you think of endless beaches, bathed in warm sunlight under cloudless skies, with the sweet strains of melody playing in the distance, welcoming you to a tropical paradise. The turquoise water laps at the golden beach, as coconut trees swaying in the sweet-salty zephyrs greet the boats, their sails flapping in the ocean breeze as they near the shore. Despite their beauty, these are rugged islands, formed from still-active volcanoes. Everywhere you look there is casual, sensual beauty: In a nearby field, a thousand colorful flowers are blooming; a girl in a straw skirt dances cheerfully a native hula. This is the paradise that people from around the world have been told to dream of: far away, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the Hawaiian Islands. Music has always played a central role within the Native Hawaiian culture. From the beginning, the mele or chant was the musical means for Native Hawaiians to pass on their stories of their gods and traditions. When the voyagers from the western lands arrived in the 19th century, a new era of multi-ethnic communication began, combining American and European musical instruments, song forms and harmony with the rich Polynesian aboriginal singing culture. The most characteristic instruments identified with Hawaiian music are the ukulele and slack-key guitar, both of which were introduced by the Portuguese, but topping the list must rank the Hawaiian Steel Guitar. Developed in Hawaii by Joseph Kekuku in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Hawaiian Steel Guitar was played horizontally on the lap, with a bar or slide called a steel (generally made of metal, but also of glass or other materials) allowing the player to play wide sweeps and slides across the entire range of the instrument. The popularization of Hawaiian music around the world began in the last quarter of the 19th century, mainly through the publishing of many of the songs of Queen Liliʻuokalani in the United States – Aloha ʻOe (Farewell to Thee) was her most famous song. The popularity of this island music brought about a new type of musical fusion called hapa haole, literally, “half-foreign.” Soon, the whole country was swaying to hapa haole tunes, some with made-up “Hawaiian” words by Tin Pan Alley songwriters. In time, many viewed hapa haole music as inauthentic, a tool of the tourism industry, but after the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s brought the language indigenous back to life, hapa haole music experienced its own revival and today is recognized for allowing Hawai‘i’s music and composers to flourish even when the language seemed lost. The thirteen songs included on this album were hand selected by Rhymoi’s producer Ye Yuchuan, from the classics of traditional Hawaiian and Hapa haole music dating from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. It is the story of the Hawaiian Islands in sound, a musical memory that blends native Hawaiian and American popular cultures. Joining Yunchuan Ye on this project is Dave Way, a four-time Grammy award-winning sound engineer. Dave, a legend in the recording industry, has worked with artists such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and many others. Together the two men assembled a group of veteran U.S. Hawaiian musicians, who brought with them dozens of priceless antique guitars of various shapes and sounds, as well as other vintage instruments. And finally, the sweet, intoxicating voice of Asian-Polynesian singer Tavita Te'o. This extraordinary team delivered utterly authentic performances of Golden Age of Hawaiian song in full glorious retro- nostalgic sound! It is Yunchuan Ye’s hope that these joyful songs can transport listeners to experience the beauty of these tropical islands, and appreciate the openness and tolerance of the multi-ethnic Hawaiian society that inspired this music to be created. Known as an emotional song of lovers parting, it was written by Hawaii’s Queen Liliʻuokalani (1838 –1917) in 1878 and is her most famous song. Images of coconut trees, white sand beaches and hula girls in grass skirts fueled the market for “hapa-haole” tunes. Throughout the 1930’s, both younger tourists and Hawaiian musicians had been caught up with the jazz rhythms of the Mainland bands. It was written by Joseph Kapeau Ae`a in 1881 and was originally called "Ke Ala Tuberose". The lyrics of the song tell of the beauty of Hilo (the largest city on the Big Island of Hawaii) as well as the beauty of the Lehua flower. 04.莫阿娜钟琴 Moana Chimes 原曲:M.K.Moke 这里的钟琴,并不是人们熟知的西洋打击乐器,而是指一种特殊的钢弦吉他演奏技巧,即通过静止琴弦的方式,产生宛若钟声的美妙泛音。莫阿娜,在夏威夷语中则代表“海洋”之意。相传波里尼西亚原住民的祖先,就是在千年之前,自遥远的不知名的地方跨越太平洋,最终到达了这个秀美丰茂的乐园。此曲中,用钟琴技巧演奏出的轻巧起落的音韵,如同在海风中摇晃鸣响的铃铛,温柔而惆怅地讲述着起伏的浪涛中被遗忘的往事。 04.Moana Chimes Original Melody: M.K.Moke Moana Chimes was composed by M.K.Moke, steel guitarist with Johnny Noble and His Hawaiians in 1929. This song features a steel guitar technique known as 'chimes', or bell like tones or harmonics produced by lightly touching the strings at special points to produce shimmering, bell-like tones an octave higher. The Moana means "ocean" in Hawaiian, and according to legend, the ancestors of the Aboriginal people of Polynesia crossed the Pacific Ocean from a remote and unknown place thousands of years ago, finally settling on this tropical paradise. In this song, the bright tones played with the chime technique are like bells swaying in the sea breeze, gently and eloquently telling of a forgotten past. 05.草裙舞布鲁斯 Hula Blues 原曲:Sonny Cunha & Johnny Noble 在夕阳垂落的沙滩上,有着明亮眼睛和热情笑容的波利尼西亚女郎,身着艳丽的衣裙,将芳香花环佩戴在胸前,伴随传统音乐,舞动如海浪起伏般充满动感气息的舞蹈。这便是草裙舞,夏威夷古老而最具代表性的活动之一。本专辑所收录的这首创作于1915年的草裙舞曲,体现出典型的Hapa Haole风格。滑棒吉他和指弹吉他,合奏带有布鲁斯色彩的质朴诙谐的旋律,带人重温美国黄金时代的音乐风采。 05.Hula Blues Original Melody: Sonny Cunha & Johnny Noble In the early 20th century small bands of Hawaiian musicians began touring the United States. Audiences loved the exotic melodies and novel sounds. In 1912, a Broadway show called Bird of Paradise introduced Hawaiian music to many Americans in 1912 and within a couple of years, Hawaiian music sold more recordings than any other style in the country. The growing popularity of Hawaiian music inspired many exciting collaborations with blues and country musicians. One of the great musicians from this time was Sol Hoʻopiʻi who played both Hawaiian music and jazz. The Hula Blues was written in 1915 by Sonny Cunha and Johnny Noble and is a great example of the“Hapa Haole”music tradition of Hawaii and an example of how Hawaiian music fused with Ragtime and Blues. 06.感伤之旅 Sentimental Journey 原曲:Les Brown & Ben Homer 此曲原是美国传奇女星多丽丝·戴的成名曲,发行于1945年。当时恰逢二战即将结束,据说许多退伍军人,在从欧洲战场返回美国家乡的路途中,都聆听过这优美伤感的旋律。本专辑所收录的以夏威夷音乐风格改编的器乐版本,则以海阔天空的洒脱和豁达,替代了原曲迷惘伤感的氛围。轻灵的木琴,与活泼的萨克斯,点缀在甜蜜的吉他弦音中。用一场通往热带天堂的旅程,挥别流浪的岁月,封存昨日的回忆。 06.Sentimental Journey Original Melody: Les Brown & Ben Homer Written by Les Brown & Ben Homer with lyrics by Bud Green, Sentimental Journey is considered a standard in jazz and popular music. It’s first release in 1945 featuring singer Doris Day coincided with the end of World War II and has often been associated with Veterans, nostalgia and journeys abroad. The Hawaiian-style instrumental version specially arranged for this album lightens the melancholy mood of the original song with the addition of the vibraphone and some lively clarinet licks to compliment the sweet sound of the Hawaiian guitar, giving the song a Western Swing feel. 07.哈纳雷小调 Hanalei Medley 原曲:Alfred Alohikea 远方连绵的山脉,在阳光的照射下,散发着如同宝石般的翠绿光彩。来自太平洋的劲风,在半月形的海湾中掀起巨大的浪涛。金黄色的沙滩,沿着郁郁葱葱的椰林蔓延,仿佛通向地平线的尽头。怀旧抒情的乐声,由一把1928年出产的古董钢弦吉他领衔演绎。在至今仍受到夏威夷钢弦吉他演奏家们喜爱的浪漫旋律中,领略夏威夷考艾岛的著名景点哈纳雷湾的秀丽风光。 07.Hanalei Medley Original Melody: Alfred Alohikea This is a medley of songs composed by Alfred Alohikea about the beautiful Hanalei District on the island of Kauai. It is usually given as a gift to guests from afar, meaning friendship, love and sincere blessings. The song Sweet Lei Mokihana composed by George Manoa Huddy speaks of the beauty of a lei made from the Mokihana flower - the official flower of the island of Kauai. The place names in the song are all on Kauai and Makana was renowned for the fragrant Lauae fern. The Mokihana berry must be strung within a few hours of picking and is known as the symbol of the island. 09.檀香山进行曲 Honolulu March 原曲:Pale K. Lua & David kaili The Honolulu March was originally recorded by Pale K. Lua and David Kaili in 1914. Lua was one of the first steel guitarists to incorporate the triplet picking technique or triple strum into Hawaiian music. Hawaiian marches were made popular by the Prussian military bandleader, Henri Berger a gifted band leader and educator sent by the Kaiser at the request of of King Kamehameha V to serve as leader of the Royal Hawaiian Band in 1877. Berger became fascinated by Hawaiian folk music, and wrote about his encounters. Each of the islands are associated with the colors of the most famous flowers native to each island. Hawaiʻi is represented by the color red and the lehua flower. Mauiʻs color is pink and its flower is the roselani or lokelani. Yellow is the color for Oʻahu and ʻilima is its flower. In 1810, King Kamehameha I, after years of war, finally unified the Hawaiian Islands and established the Kingdom of Hawaii.The Law of the Paddle guaranteed safe passage for women, children and the sick. As with many love songs, there are multiple meanings (or "Kaona") buried in the song’s lyrics. Queen Liliʻuokalani created an embroidered ribbon with the words "Mai Poina Oe'la'” while she was imprisoned in Iʻolani Palace after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Musicians: Ken Emerson (Hawaiian Steel Guitar, Ukelele) Oahu island born and bred Ken Lopaka Emerson is one of the world's highly regarded living traditional Hawaiian guitarists. Born into a musical family, Emerson grew up listening to his father’s extensive record collection of Jazz, Swing, Hawaiian and World music styles. Learning from the masters on old 78 rpm recordings, Ken revives the lost styles of the past on his vintage 1920's instruments. Ken's original compositions and performances helped bring in the first ever 2005 GRAMMY award for Hawaiian music. Dividing his time between Hawaii and San Francisco, he frequently tours the United States, Europe and Asia. Dean Parks (Elec. Guitar, Ac. He is known for his infectious enthusiasm and humor and has wowed audiences across the country with his prowess and versatility on bass, piano and accordion. He was bassist in LA’s Hearts and Flowers, which also featured singer/ songwriters Larry Murray and Rick Cunha and guitarist Bernie Leadon. Leadon and Jackson joined the first version of Dillard & Clark in 1968 and stayed with the group until Clark left in late 1969. On their second LP, he played not only guitar but also piano and cello. Aloha is an essence of being: it is love, peace, compassion, and a mutual understanding of respect. Aloha means living in harmony with the people and land around you with mercy, sympathy, grace, and kindness. Close your eyes and think of the most beautiful place on earth, and almost, as if by instinct, you think of endless beaches, bathed in warm sunlight under cloudless skies, with the sweet strains of melody playing in the distance, welcoming you to a tropical paradise. The turquoise water laps at the golden beach, as coconut trees swaying in the sweet-salty zephyrs greet the boats, their sails flapping in the ocean breeze as they near the shore. Despite their beauty, these are rugged islands, formed from still-active volcanoes. Everywhere you look there is casual, sensual beauty: In a nearby field, a thousand colorful flowers are blooming; a girl in a straw skirt dances cheerfully a native hula. This is the paradise that people from around the world have been told to dream of: far away, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the Hawaiian Islands. Music has always played a central role within the Native Hawaiian culture. From the beginning, the mele or chant was the musical means for Native Hawaiians to pass on their stories of their gods and traditions. When the voyagers from the western lands arrived in the 19th century, a new era of multi-ethnic communication began, combining American and European musical instruments, song forms and harmony with the rich Polynesian aboriginal singing culture. The most characteristic instruments identified with Hawaiian music are the ukulele and slack-key guitar, both of which were introduced by the Portuguese, but topping the list must rank the Hawaiian Steel Guitar. Developed in Hawaii by Joseph Kekuku in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Hawaiian Steel Guitar was played horizontally on the lap, with a bar or slide called a steel (generally made of metal, but also of glass or other materials) allowing the player to play wide sweeps and slides across the entire range of the instrument. The popularization of Hawaiian music around the world began in the last quarter of the 19th century, mainly through the publishing of many of the songs of Queen Liliʻuokalani in the United States – Aloha ʻOe (Farewell to Thee) was her most famous song. The popularity of this island music brought about a new type of musical fusion called hapa haole, literally, “half-foreign.” Soon, the whole country was swaying to hapa haole tunes, some with made-up “Hawaiian” words by Tin Pan Alley songwriters. In time, many viewed hapa haole music as inauthentic, a tool of the tourism industry, but after the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s brought the language indigenous back to life, hapa haole music experienced its own revival and today is recognized for allowing Hawai‘i’s music and composers to flourish even when the language seemed lost. The thirteen songs included on this album were hand selected by Rhymoi’s producer Ye Yuchuan, from the classics of traditional Hawaiian and Hapa haole music dating from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. It is the story of the Hawaiian Islands in sound, a musical memory that blends native Hawaiian and American popular cultures. Joining Yunchuan Ye on this project is Dave Way, a four-time Grammy award-winning sound engineer. Dave, a legend in the recording industry, has worked with artists such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and many others. Together the two men assembled a group of veteran U.S. Hawaiian musicians, who brought with them dozens of priceless antique guitars of various shapes and sounds, as well as other vintage instruments. And finally, the sweet, intoxicating voice of Asian-Polynesian singer Tavita Te'o. Known as an emotional song of lovers parting, it was written by Hawaii’s Queen Liliʻuokalani (1838 –1917) in 1878 and is her most famous song. Throughout the 1930’s, both younger tourists and Hawaiian musicians had been caught up with the jazz rhythms of the Mainland bands. It was written by Joseph Kapeau Ae`a in 1881 and was originally called "Ke Ala Tuberose". This song features a steel guitar technique known as 'chimes', or bell like tones or harmonics produced by lightly touching the strings at special points to produce shimmering, bell-like tones an octave higher. The Moana means "ocean" in Hawaiian, and according to legend, the ancestors of the Aboriginal people of Polynesia crossed the Pacific Ocean from a remote and unknown place thousands of years ago, finally settling on this tropical paradise. Audiences loved the exotic melodies and novel sounds. In 1912, a Broadway show called Bird of Paradise introduced Hawaiian music to many Americans in 1912 and within a couple of years, Hawaiian music sold more recordings than any other style in the country. The growing popularity of Hawaiian music inspired many exciting collaborations with blues and country musicians. One of the great musicians from this time was Sol Hoʻopiʻi who played both Hawaiian music and jazz. It’s first release in 1945 featuring singer Doris Day coincided with the end of World War II and has often been associated with Veterans, nostalgia and journeys abroad. It is usually given as a gift to guests from afar, meaning friendship, love and sincere blessings. The song Sweet Lei Mokihana composed by George Manoa Huddy speaks of the beauty of a lei made from the Mokihana flower - the official flower of the island of Kauai. The place names in the song are all on Kauai and Makana was renowned for the fragrant Lauae fern. Lua & David kaili The Honolulu March was originally recorded by Pale K. Lua and David Kaili in 1914. Lua was one of the first steel guitarists to incorporate the triplet picking technique or triple strum into Hawaiian music. Hawaiian marches were made popular by the Prussian military bandleader, Henri Berger a gifted band leader and educator sent by the Kaiser at the request of of King Kamehameha V to serve as leader of the Royal Hawaiian Band in 1877. Berger became fascinated by Hawaiian folk music, and wrote about his encounters. Each of the islands are associated with the colors of the most famous flowers native to each island. Hawaiʻi is represented by the color red and the lehua flower. Mauiʻs color is pink and its flower is the roselani or lokelani. Yellow is the color for Oʻahu and ʻilima is its flower. In 1810, King Kamehameha I, after years of war, finally unified the Hawaiian Islands and established the Kingdom of Hawaii.The Law of the Paddle guaranteed safe passage for women, children and the sick. Queen Liliʻuokalani created an embroidered ribbon with the words "Mai Poina Oe'la'” while she was imprisoned in Iʻolani Palace after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Aubrey Richmond (Violin) Aibrey is a sought-after live and studio musician who’s performed with a vast array of artists of every genre, as well as Grammy and award-winning producers and songwriters. Playing with a maturity that belies his youth, he has accrued both a band and a following that reflects his dual commitment to deep musical exploration and old-school entertainment. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music's prestigious jazz program, his prowess as a musician never obscures his talent as an entertainer. Tavita Te’o (Vocals) Tavita Te'o appears courtesy of Dunbarton Records. Tavita's repertoire is both backyard-bred and classically trained. Tavita's full length debut album is set to release in 2020. David P Jackson (Bass) David Jackson, bass player extraordinaire, is much in demand as a studio musician and voice-over artist. He is known for his infectious enthusiasm and humor and has wowed audiences across the country with his prowess and versatility on bass, piano and accordion. He was bassist in LA’s Hearts and Flowers, which also featured singer/ songwriters Larry Murray and Rick Cunha and guitarist Bernie Leadon. Leadon and Jackson joined the first version of Dillard & Clark in 1968 and stayed with the group until Clark left in late 1969. On their second LP, he played not only guitar but also piano and cello. Throughout an extraordinary career Dave has played with The New Christy Minstrels, The Dillard and Clark Expedition (with Gene Clark, Doug Dillard, and Bernie Leadon), Hoyt Axton , Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Bo Diddley, Glen Campbell, Roger Miller and Dwight Yoakum and a host of other equally talented musicians and performers.
